Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na₃PO₄. It is a highly soluble white, granular or crystalline powder known for its strong alkalinity and excellent cleaning properties.

Key Characteristics and Traditional Uses:

• Powerful Cleaner: For decades, TSP was a primary ingredient in heavy-duty cleaners, degreasers, and primers. It is exceptionally effective at removing stubborn dirt, grease, grime, and soot from surfaces like walls and wood, which is why it was historically a key component in pre-paint cleaning.

• Multi-Purpose Agent: Beyond cleaning, it has served various roles as a:

  • Food Additive: In the past, it was used in certain foods (e.g., processed cheeses and meats) as an emulsifier and to adjust acidity. Its use in food has been significantly reduced or banned in many countries due to health concerns.

  • Water Softener: It helps to sequester minerals in hard water, preventing them from interfering with cleaning agents.

  • Stain Remover: It was a common ingredient in laundry detergents.

Important Note on Modern Use:

While highly effective, the use of TSP has declined in many consumer products. This is because the high phosphate content can contribute to eutrophication—a process that depletes oxygen in waterways and harms aquatic ecosystems. As a result, many regions have implemented phosphate bans in household detergents and cleaners.

Today, TSP is often replaced by phosphate-free alternatives for general consumer use but may still be used in specific industrial, commercial, or restoration applications where its powerful capabilities are necessary.
