What is Activated Clay?
Activated clay is a type of clay that has been chemically or thermally treated to increase its adsorption capacity. It is typically composed of bentonite or kaolin clay and is activated by treating it with acid or other chemicals or by subjecting it to high temperatures. The activation process creates a porous structure with an increased surface area, allowing the clay to effectively adsorb and remove impurities, color, and other contaminants from liquids and oils. Due to its excellent adsorption properties, activated clay is widely used in various industries, including oil refining, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and edible oil processing, for purification, decolorization, and filtering applications.
Activated Clay Uses
Edible Oil Refining: Used to purify and refine vegetable oils by removing impurities and color pigments, resulting in high-quality, transparent oils with a neutral taste.
Petrochemical Industry: Employed to purify and decolorize petroleum derivatives like waxes, mineral oils, and lubricants in the petrochemical sector.
Bleaching of Fuels: Utilized in fuel treatment, particularly for biodiesel and other fuels, to reduce unwanted pigments and contaminants.
Pharmaceuticals: Found in pharmaceutical applications as an excipient in tablet formulations and for purifying drugs and their intermediates.
Chemical Processing: Used as an adsorbent in chemical processing to eliminate impurities and colors from a wide range of chemical substances.
Wastewater Treatment: Valuable in treating wastewater, aiding in the removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals from water streams.
