The Toyota Wildlander is a sport utility vehicle produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota.

The vehicle was presented by GAC Toyota Motor in October 2019. Sales started exclusively on the Chinese market in February 2020. The first vehicles were delivered in April 2020. In April 2021, the series was presented as a plug-in hybrid at the Shanghai Auto Show. One month later, it went on sale in China. The SUV is almost identical to the Toyota RAV4, but is visually based on Lexus models.  However, the RAV4 is not built in China by the GAC-Toyota joint venture, but by the FAW-Toyota joint venture.

Two models of the series are therefore offered in China. This market positioning is not unusual in China; for example, Volkswagen also offers the VW T-Cross as the VW Tacqua, or Honda also offers the Honda HR-V as the Honda XR-V.  Toyota also has other identical models in its portfolio, such as the Toyota C-HR and the Toyota Izoa, or the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Levin . The reason for this strategy is considered to be regional differences in the People’s Republic of China.

The new Toyota Wildlander features a new front fascia and slimmer taillights at the rear compared to the RAV4

GAC-Toyota has just unveiled a new SUV model dubbed Wildlander, which can be easily identified as a restyled Toyota RAV4. However, the styling is significantly different, at both ends.

While nobody’s going to confuse the Wildlander with a Lexus, its front fascia does sort of feature half, if not 3/4 of a Spindle grille, like the ones we’re familiar with when it comes to the likes of the ES, UX, RX, NX, LC and so on.

According to Auto163, the Toyota Wildlander also features Matrix LED headlights, which are sleeker than the ones in the 2020 RAV4, re-positioned fog lights, a new bumper design, and brand new taillights as well (more horizontal) that occupy more space on the tailgate.

Buyers will be able to opt between two available powertrains. First, there is a 170 HP 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline model and a 219 HP 2.5-liter hybrid version. The former will work alongside a CVT gearbox, while the hybrid will utilize an E-CVT setup with available ECO, Normal and Sport modes.
